Matt Sheldon From UCD Signs Contract With SG Kinzenbach
Former Aggie Matt Sheldon has become the latest player out of UC Davis to sign a professional contract. Sheldon’s successful collegiate career at Davis has found him joining the squad of SG Kinzenbach for the remainder of the 2016 season as the club looks to continue its unbeaten streak.
Soccer News from UC Davis: Former UC Davis men’s soccer standout Matt Sheldon has become the latest Aggie to sign on with a professional squad, inking a deal with SG Kinzenbach in the German Hessen Verbandsliga.
Sheldon signed on the dotted line during the league’s winter transfer period on Feb. 2 and will compete with coach Andre Weinecker’s side for the remainder of the season, which runs through June. SG Kinzenbach is unbeaten in its last five matches and is 6-10-1 overall in league play on the year for 19 points.
“Matt was an outstanding player for our program,” Head Coach Dwyane Shaffer said. “He had the dream to become a professional and he worked extremely hard to become one. He will do well as a pro because he has tremendous pace and an excellent work ethic. It’s awesome to add the name another UC Davis soccer player to the professional ranks.”
A two-time All-Big West second-team selection, and a Big West All-Academic honoree as a junior, Sheldon played four seasons for the Aggies from 2011-14, finishing his career with 15 goals and seven assists for 37 points. As a senior, he shared the team lead with four goals and 10 points on a club-high 39 shots, netting scores against Loyola Marymount, San Diego, Cal Poly, and Sacramento State.
As a junior, he shared the team lead in 2013 with a career-high six goals and 13 points, including a trio of game-winning goals. Just under half (seven) of his 15 career goals finished as game-winners during his UC Davis career, as the Portland, Ore., native finished ranked second on the school’s Division I list in career points (37), goals (15), and shots (124), while matching Quincy Amarikwa’s mark for game-winners.
During his time in Davis, the Aggies won 33 matches overall and nearly 60 percent of the team’s Big West contests during his four-year career, helping UC Davis to three Big West Conference Tournament berths, a pair of semifinal appearances, and a North Division title and tournament championship match appearance in 2012.
