New Head Coach First Match: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles Lost To Lobos
A new head coach takes over, and his team’s first match foretells of hard work ahead.
Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles went on the road and suffered a 3-1 loss against host Lobos BUAP in a Week 15 match Saturday at Estadio Universitario.
The Xoloitzcuintles have two regular-season matches remaining. It hosts Monarcas Morelia Saturday, Nov. 10 in a Week 16 match at Estadio Caliente. It closes out the regular season with a Week 17 match at Puebla FC Nov. 23.
This was obviously not the way Franky Oviedo wanted to make his debut as the manager in the Mexican first division. The Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles interim coach saw his squad lose 3-1 to Lobos BUAP on the road Saturday night.
“The plan is to keep working, correct mistakes and prepare for our next match at home next week,” Oviedo said in his post-match news conference.
“You have this sour taste. That’s soccer.”
“These things happen and then you get a rematch and there will be another chance. Sometimes you fall and sometimes you’re on top,” added Oviedo.
Oviedo said it is important for his team to remain optimistic as it heads into the final two matches of the regular season. “We need to lift our spirits as a team and work so that we can have a dignified finish at home against Morelia,” Oviedo said.
Xolos vs Lobos Game Recap:
Colin Karim Richards scored in each half for the Lobos while Ignacio Rivero found the net for the Xoloitzcuintles. Richards gave the home side the lead in the 31st minute.
Richards poked in the ball for the 1-0 lead after a cross into the penalty area was bright down by Leonardo Ramos.
The ball split two Xolos defenders and landed at Richards’ feet. All the British striker had to do is poke it in while sliding, beating Tijuana goalkeeper Gibran Lajud.
The Lobos striker scored again while sliding, poking in another cross with a defender on his back in the 50th minute. His goal came a minute after Tijuana’s Ignacio Rivero tied the match 1-1 with a header off a Luis Chavez floater. Mauro Lainez added a third for Lobos on a breakaway in injury time.
Club Tijuana remains at 16 points in the 2018 Apertura table with a 4-7-4 record.
