Zanelli also established and coached the California Storm, a club that became a powerhouse in the league and won three championships (1999, 2002, 2004) under his leadership. The Storm helped develop some of the biggest names in women’s soccer, including FIFA Women’s World Cup stars Brandi Chastain, Julie Foudy, Alex Morgan, and Brazilian legend Sissi.

A Relentless Voice for Women’s Soccer

“Jerry has been the leader of women’s soccer in the United States,” said John Motta, President of the United States Adult Soccer Association. “He worked tirelessly to ensure that women in this country had a competitive league to continue playing the sport they love.”

In his final interview with SoccerToday, Zanelli shared his vision: “That I fought for women’s rights in soccer — by desire and necessity.”

Zanelli’s activism extended far beyond the pitch. He began his career as a political activist in the 1960s, championing civil rights and anti-war causes. His no-nonsense approach carried over to soccer, where he remained outspoken and fiercely protective of women’s access to the game.

Honored and Remembered by the Soccer Community

In 2018, the WPSL named its championship trophy the Jerry Zanelli Cup to honor his contributions. His legacy also includes founding the Men’s Premier Soccer League, which later evolved into the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).

Soccer leaders across the country have expressed their gratitude and admiration for Zanelli:

  • Brandi Chastain: “Jerry has been a beacon of light in a dark place for so long, not for personal gain, but to give the opportunity and share the great game.”
  • Sean Jones, WPSL President: “Jerry was truly a visionary and is owed a lot of thanks by all involved in women’s soccer.”
  • Debray Ayala, WPSL Vice President: “Jerry was an innovative giant for women’s soccer. He battled every chance he got for equality.”
  • Joe Ferrara, New England Mutiny Owner: “There is not another person I have met who has had a greater impact on women’s soccer than Jerry Zanelli.”
  • Marge Perry, FC Surge Owner: “Jerry IS the WPSL. Without him, there would be no league. He fought for every player, coach, and team.”
  • Lindsay Eversmeyer, Fire & Ice SC Owner: “Jerry became one of my dearest friends and one of my biggest supporters. He was my go-to for advice and one of the first people I heard from when my team accomplished something.”

Remembering Jerry Zanelli’s Lasting Impact: More Than Soccer

Outside of soccer, Zanelli spent much of his life working in politics, including serving as an executive for the California State Senate and later as a lobbyist. Yet, his legacy will forever be tied to his relentless advocacy for women’s soccer.

Jerry Zanelli leaves behind his son, John, and daughter, Diana. He was preceded in death by his son, Aaron.

In every locker room, training session, and match under the WPSL banner, Jerry’s influence will live on.
