Chicago Red Stars Goalkeeper Helped Red Stars Earn a Point at Home In 1-1 Draw
Soccer News: Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 21 of the 2015 NWSL season.
LeBlanc, 35, made her last appearance in a regular season match as a professional helping the Red Stars earn a point at home in a 1-1 draw against Houston Dash on Sunday afternoon at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois.
The Maple Ridge, British Colombia native did well to fend off repeated attacks from the Houston offense, spearheaded by Carli Lloyd. LeBlanc faced 19 shots and 10 shots on goal and was forced to make nine saves.
Perhaps the most important save came in stoppage time just after the Red Stars had equalized. LeBlanc faced Lloyd in the box when the midfielder unleashed a shot at close range, the keeper did well to block the shot and preserve the tie game.
A former University of Nebraska alum, LeBlanc is the fifth Red Stars player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week in 2015. It is also her third time receiving the award in NWSL history.
The Chicago Red Stars will play their first NWSL Playoff match on Saturday, Sep. 13 at 1:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 against FC Kansas City at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
