Forward Mike Magee Named MLS Player of the Week
In an almost sold out Stub Hub Center, the LA Galaxy turned a rocky start into a glorious victory, Sunday evening.
Soccer News from the LA Galaxy – The LA Galaxy went down early, but came storming back in the second half to defeat D.C. United 4-1 on Sunday at StubHub Center. Lamar Neagle opened the scoring for D.C. just five minutes into the game and the visitors could have easily doubled their lead on a handful of occasions.
Replacing Giovani dos Santos at the break, after the Mexican international picked up a left leg injury, Mike Magee was an immediate threat up top as he harassed the D.C. United defense.
LA took advantage and finally equalized in the 54th minute with MLS debutant Daniel Steres scoring on a booming header off a Magee corner kick. Magee took care of the go-ahead goal himself just 10 minutes later when he chipped the goalkeeper from inside the area. Robbie Keane iced the result with a penalty kick in the final 10 minutes of the game and Magee added his second goal minutes later with a header off a Steven Gerrard free kick.
Magee was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 1 of the 2016 MLS Season. Magee’s standout performance came in his first game back with the Galaxy since being traded in 2013 to the Chicago Fire in exchange for Robbie Rogers. In all time MLS play, the veteran now has scored 66 goals and notched an additional 35 assists. His brace marked the third time the forward has recorded a multi-goal game for the Galaxy.
Brian Rowe also showed a standout performance. Rowe barely had a chance to get warmed up when he was inserted for the injured Dan Kennedy in the 19th minute, but the backup goalkeeper shined, making five saves in the LA Galaxy’s win.
With the Galaxy ahead 2-1 midway through the second half, Rowe again came through in the clutch when he made three stops between the 71st and 78th minute that allowed LA to keep their advantage.
