Landon Donovan Comes Out of Retirement to Join LA Galaxy
MLS goal and assist leader Landon Donovan has announced he will come out of retirement for the remainder of the 2016 with the LA Galaxy. Donovan will be available for the club’s match versus Orlando City SC this Sunday as the most decorated American soccer player returns from a questionable early retirement.
MLS Soccer News: American soccer legend Landon Donovan has come out of retirement and signed with the LA Galaxy for the remainder of the 2016 season. Donovan is Major League Soccer’s most accomplished player with league records in career goals and assists.
Donovan joins an impressive Galaxy squad with the likes of Mexican international Giovani dos Santos and Englishman Steven Gerrard. Galaxy are hoping to make a deep playoff run as Donovan looks to bring championship glory back to Los Angeles.
Nothing would make me happier than standing on the field with Talon and the rest of my family celebrating the Galaxy’s 6th championship on December 10th,” said Donovan.
With just three regular season home matches remaining in the 2016 season, Donovan will be available for selection this Sunday against Orlando City SC at the StubHub Center.
Donovan notes his decision came following him serving as an analyst during the LA Galaxy versus Vancouver Whitecaps match where Galaxy suffered injuries to three players. Nigel De Jong was then transferred to Turkish side Galatasaray and news broke that Gyasi Zardes would be out for the remainder of the season.
Donovan has remained in close contact with the Galaxy staff and players since his retirement.
“I know this won’t be received well by everyone. That’s okay. I’ve always made decisions in life based on two guiding principles: my own happiness and the happiness of those I love and care about,” said Donovan.
