NASL Soccer News: Miami FC concluded its inaugural season in the North American Soccer League (NASL) with a 1-0 win over FC Edmonton on Friday night at Florida International University (FIU) Stadium. The victory capped a magical first season for the club, and for soccer fans in the 305.
In its first season, Miami FC experienced substantial growth both on the pitch and off. The season kicked off in true Miami fashion before 10,156 chanting fans – the highest attended NASL match in 2016. After a challenging NASL Spring Season, the squad made key signings to strengthen its roster and turned in the strongest performance of any Florida squad during the Fall Season.
Miami FC finished in the top five after recording separate four-game and six-game unbeaten streaks, in the process knocking down NASL front-runners Indy Eleven and FC Edmonton, as well as registering a dominating 4-0 away victory against Minnesota United FC.
At home, the Orange and Blue continued to welcome large crowds of supporters to FIU Stadium. Led by the Dade Brigade, Miami FC posted the three highest attended matches during the 2016 NASL campaign. In addition, Miami FC held an average attendance of 6,229 fans, the highest average of all Florida-based NASL clubs in the Fall Season. The club hosted nearly 87,000 fans at FIU Stadium throughout the entire season – the highest of any expansion team this campaign.
“We are grateful to all our fans for their incredible support throughout our inaugural season,” said Club CEO Sean Flynn. “Miami has always been a fútbol town and we are honored to be its fútbol club. This season marked a stunning return of world class soccer to the 305, led by Alessandro Nesta and our exceptional technical staff. We are looking forward to building upon our success from 2016 with an eye on the playoffs in 2017.”
