MLS Release Expansion Draft Player List
The MLS Expanstion Draft will take place on Tuesday as Atlanta United and Minnesota United FC begin their transition into the top level of American soccer. Atlanta will hold the first pick of the draft as they select the first player from the list of 259 individuals.
MLS Soccer News: Major League Soccer has announced the list of players available for selection in the 2016 Expansion Draft that will be held Tuesday, December 13th, at 2 p.m. ET.
The Expansion Draft will provide an opportunity for the league’s latest expansion clubs, Atlanta United and Minnesota United FC, to select up to five players from the list of 259 available players. Atlanta will have the first selection in the Expansion Draft.
The 2016 Expansion Draft will be streamed live here.
Each current MLS team had the opportunity to protect 11 players from their 2016 roster.
Generation adidas players (who did not graduate at the end of the 2016 campaign) and Homegrown Players on a club’s off-budget roster are automatically protected and do not count against a team’s 11 protected roster spots.
Designated Players are not automatically protected. If a Designated Player has a no trade clause in his contract, then the club must protect him in the Expansion Draft.
Once a player has been selected from a team’s unprotected roster, that team may not lose any further players (all additional players from that team become ineligible for selection).
