Tampa Bay Rowdies Fall to Columbus Crew SC
Tampa Bay Rowdies fell to Columbus Crew SC as the Fourth Round of the 2016 U.S. Open Cup concluded on Wednesday night. Crew SC are set to face the Chicago Fire in the Round of 16 on June 29th as they advance to this stage for the fourth consecutive season.
Soccer News: Columbus Crew SC hosted the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Wednesday night in the Fourth Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Crew SC closed out a 4-0 victory in a dominant performance over the NASL side at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The MLS club advances to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive season as they prepare to face the Chicago Fire on June 29th. Chicago defeated Indy Eleven in penalty kicks on Wednesday night in a hard fought battle at Toyota Park.
Tampa Bay started off the match giving a strong push against the MLS club, but due to weather conditions the match was temporarily delayed in the 26th minute for just under an hour.
Following the restart of play, the match was all Crew SC with Justin Meram scoring the opening goal in the 41st minute. The match went into the break with a 1-0 advantage to Columbus.
The second half of play was all Columbus Crew with Cristian Martinez extending the lead in the 48th minute to tally his second competitive goal for Crew SC. Ethan Finlay finished a penalty four minutes later with Marshall Hollingsworth tallying his first professional goal in the 65th minute off an assist from Hector Jimenez.
Crew SC goalkeeper Brad Stuver recorded four saves on the night to get the clean sheet in his third career start in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
The Black & Gold return to league play this Saturday versus Didier Drogba and the Montreal Impact at MAPFRE Stadium.
