Juan Arango of the New York Cosmos has received NASL Player of the Month honors after leading his side with four goals and three assists during the month of October. The Cosmos now gear up for The Championship Final on Sunday versus Indy Eleven at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y.
NASL Soccer News: As the New York Cosmos captured the North American Soccer League (NASL) Fall Season title and gear up for the The Championship Final, veteran midfielder Juan Arango has received NASL Player of the Month honors.
The Maracay, Venezuela, native guided the Cosmos’ attack in the month of October with performances that earned him the award voted by the media.
Arango, 36, recorded 15 goals and 7 assists during the regular season, both of which tied him for second in each category in the NASL. The Cosmos won four games and tied one during the month of October as Arango tallied four goals and dished out three assists over four matches (he sat out the season finale at Minnesota). Arango was named the league’s Player of the Week during the month and was selected three times to the Team of the Week.
“This is a great honor for me and the organization because we have worked very hard to be where we are today,” Arango said. “We are staying focused on The Championship and we want to continue with the good run of results we had during October.”
Arango joined the Cosmos this season after a career in Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Spain, and Germany. He played 183 times and scored 45 goals for Mallorca of La Liga, before moving to the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach, where he made 154 appearances and scored 25 goals.
“This is a very deserving award for Juan because he is having an outstanding season,” said Cosmos head coach Giovanni Savarese. “October was a good month for the team and Juan played a big role in most of the games. I look forward to The Championship and what he will be able to contribute.”
Arango led his side over Rayo OKC on Saturday, recording one goal and an assist in the semifinal matchup.
The Cosmos continue their quest for a third title in the NASL’s Modern Era when they host Indy Eleven in The Championship at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y., on Sunday, November 13, at 7 p.m. ET.
