Dario Cvitanich is Named NASL Player of the Week
Dario Cvitanich is named NASL Player of the Week following Miami FC’s 2-0 victory over FC Edmonton on Sunday. The Baradero, Argentina, native tallied his eighth goal of the year as he sits in the top five on the NASL scoring chart. Miami host the Carolina RailHawks on Wednesday night at Ocean Bank Field with kickoff set for 8 p.m. ET.
NASL Soccer News: Miami FC forward Dario Cvitanich has been named North American Soccer League (NASL) Player of the Week after scoring in the club’s statement road win over FC Edmonton, the league announced Monday.
The Baradero, Argentina, native tallied the opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Eddies, rounding the goalkeeper and finishing calmly into the net in the 14th minute of the Week 11 encounter. The goal – Cvitanich’s eighth this year – vaulted him into the top five on the league’s scoring chart.
“It’s an honor to be named Player of the Week, but it was truly a team effort and I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” Cvitanich said. “I’m happy to contribute to our success. We’ve been training hard every day and it’s finally paying off. I hope to continue scoring goals and helping my team make it to the playoffs.”
Cvitanich’s goal on Sunday was of the opportunistic variety, as the 32-year-old forward stripped the ball from Eddies midfielder and fellow Argentine Nico Di Biase before dribbling past the goalkeeper and finding the back of the net. The early strike set the tone for Miami, which went on to add a second-half goal through forward Vincenzo Rennella.
The win kept Miami unbeaten on the road in the Fall Season and vaulted the club into third place in the NASL Fall Season Standings. The result was perhaps more impressive given how strong the Eddies have been at home this season. Miami dealt the Eddies their first home loss since April 10.
A veteran of the top divisions in the Netherlands, France, Argentina, and Mexico, Cvitanich leads Miami FC in scoring during its inaugural NASL season. The forward’s eight goals have been complimented by five apiece from midfielders Ariel Martinez and Kwadwo Poku.
“I’m very happy for Dario,” said Miami FC head coach Alessandro Nesta. “He’s one of our most experienced players and he’s a very important person for us on and off the pitch. Our win yesterday against Edmonton was probably our most important win so far this season, and Dario helped us achieve that.”
Before joining Miami FC prior to the start of the 2016 season, Cvitanich most recently played in Liga MX with Pachuca. Also on his resume are clubs like Ajax (Netherlands), Boca Juniors (Argentina), and Nice (France).
Miami FC has a quick turnaround this week after touching down from Edmonton. The club plays host to the Carolina RailHawks on Wednesday night as Nesta’s side looks to continue shooting up the Fall Season Standings. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET at Ocean Bank Field, and the game can be seen live on CBS Sports Network.
