NASL Soccer News: FC Edmonton midfielder Ben Fisk has been named North American Soccer League (NASL) Player of the Week after clinching the Canadian side’s first postseason berth since 2011. Fisk booked the playoff spot with a header in the 13th minute in the Eddies’ 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Sunday afternoon.
Assisted by Dustin Corea, Fisk’s goal stood as the game-winner in a hard-fought battle that was played in snowy conditions in Edmonton.
“I’m very grateful to be recognized by the league as its Player of the Week,” Fisk said. “It’s a great reward for my own hard work and the team’s hard work. I would never be able to win an accolade like this without their excellent performances as well. We know we have a group that’s capable of going all the way, so we’re just taking it one game at a time and trying to perform to the best of our abilities.”
Considered a promising young talent for Canada, Fisk signed with the Eddies on July 28th after spending two years in Spain with Coruxo and Deportivo La Coruña. Since joining the NASL club, Fisk has added creativity and pace to a strong FC Edmonton defensive side.
Fisk has scored game-winning goals in consecutive matches at a time when the Eddies needed it most. Thanks to the scoring heroics of Fisk, FC Edmonton have reserved their place in The Championship, the league’s four-team postseason tournament that begins in November.
“Ben has been very good since we signed him,” said Eddies Coach Colin Miller. “He has been great to work with, his attitude has been first class, and he is a great example for all of the young Canadian players at the club as well.”
The 23-year-old Vancouver native began his career with the Whitecaps FC youth system. The 5-foot-10 midfielder made his professional debut with the Charleston Battery in 2013 before moving to Spain. Fisk has been a regular in Canada’s youth national teams over previous years.
The Eddies hit the road this week, first visiting theFort Lauderdale Strikers on Wednesday before heading traveling to Minnesota to take on the Loons on Saturday.
