New York Cosmos Top NYCFC in U.S. Open Cup
What has happened to the favored NYCFC this season? New York soccer rivalry can be intense but …. The New York Cosmos defeated New York City FC in the Fourth Round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to advance to the Round of 16 for the third consecutive year. The Cosmos prepare to face New England Revolution as the NASL club continues another successful season.
Soccer News: New York City FC conceded a late headed goal by Danny Szetela to fall to the New York Cosmos in the fourth round of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Wednesday night at Fordham University’s Coffey Field.
Szetela latched onto a cross from the right side of the pitch on a quick counter and headed from just inside the six-yard box for the game’s lone goal. The Cosmos will face New England Revolution in the Round of 16 just prior to the kick off of the 2016 NASL Fall Season. The Cosmos have advanced to the Open Cup’s Round of 16 for the third consecutive year having won three out of four matches against NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls.
Although NYCFC had the edge in possession, Eirik Johansen was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half, pushing aside a shot from 14 yards out by Juan Arango on six minutes and denying Yohandry Orozco nine minutes later.
Diego Martinez nearly put NYCFC when his swerving left-footed shot from distance handcuffed Cosmos goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer, who parried away for a corner kick in the 54th minute.
Two minutes later, Mix Diskerud latched onto a Martinez cross at the back post, but his downward header was wide of the net. In the 73rd minute, Patrick Mullins beat Maurer to a long ball, but Hunter Freeman did well to clear from the near post for an NYCFC corner.
“The feeling is great because it’s two New York teams, the East River Derby,” Szetela said. “I think it shows an NASL side can do well in the Open Cup. Our goal has been set from the beginning of the year to win it, and I think we can compete against any team.”
