NPSL Soccer News: The New York Cosmos have announced the signing of midfielder Salvatore Barone ahead of the 2019 National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) season.
Barone has come through the ranks of the Cosmos’ system, having featured in the academy and with both Cosmos B and the first team.
“I am very happy to be returning to such an amazing club with so much history,” said Barone. “I’m excited to start preseason and look forward to another successful season.”
The former St. Francis College soccer star helped the Terriers hoist the Northeast Conference title and earn a berth to the NCAA Tournament during his senior year. Salvatore was a First Team All-Northeast Conference pick after scoring five goals (two game-winners) and assisting on two others during SFC’s drive to the NEC title.
The 23-year-old made his professional debut in 2017 with the Cosmos when he came on as a substitute in a North American Soccer League (NASL) match against Indy Eleven. Most recently, Barone played with Penn FC in the United Soccer League (USL), appearing in 10 matches. He joins Aaron Dennis and Pedro Galvão as former Penn FC players to sign with the club in 2019.
The midfielder also played with the Brooklyn Italians (NPSL) in 2016 and is the son of Joe Barone, New York Cosmos Senior Vice President.
“Sal knows the club well, having made his professional debut with us in 2017,” said Joe Barone. “It’s always important to have players in the team who know the culture of the club. Developing players is also a key aspect, and we feel Sal will make even more strides now that he’s back in green and white.”
“Sal is a player who has grown up in the academy, played with Cosmos B, and the first team and has developed well over the years,” said Carlos Mendes, Cosmos head coach. “He understands the culture of the Cosmos and we expect him to take further steps forward this season.”
“He’s a left-footed player that is comfortable on the ball and understands our style of play. We’re excited to bring back one of our own to the club.”
In other news, the NPSL has announced the opening dates of the inaugural NPSL Founders Cup competition that will kick off in August.
The opening matches in the East Region are scheduled for August 10th with the New York Cosmos traveling to take on Chattanooga FC.
Full schedules for the 2019 NPSL regular season will be released in the coming weeks.
