Manchester City, English Premier League Champions, and Surf Cup Sports, one of the most influential and recognized youth soccer and events management programs in the United States, will be teaming up once again for the upcoming Nexen Manchester City Cup.
The fourth annual Nexen Manchester City Cup hosted by Surf Cup Sports will be held Memorial Day weekend, May 26 – 28, 2018, and feature boys’ and girls’ teams competing in all age groups from U8s right through to U19s. Last year the tournament included 422 teams. With the level of play expected to be even greater in 2018, the tournament is on pace to be one of the largest and most competitive youth soccer tournaments in the United States.
The goal of the tournament is to provide a forum within which international teams, national teams, and local teams can play each other, challenge themselves, and test their abilities to help them become the best they can be; all whilst providing aspiring young players with a variety of pathways to help them achieve their goals.
A unique component of the tournament is the ‘International Super Group’ competition, featuring 2004 age group academy players from a range of international clubs, including Manchester City, New York City FC, Girona FC, Club America, Chivas and the defending champions Tijuana Xolos, as well as a selection of MLS and US Soccer DA clubs.
This year’s tournament will also see three City Football Group clubs – Manchester City, Girona FC, and New York City FC – taking part together for the first time.
The ‘International Super Group’ tournament will be televised by Univision Deportes, the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI). Univision Deportes’ coverage of the Nexen Manchester City Cup is part Univision Deportes’ Prospects Series, its new year-round youth soccer initiative which aims to develop youth soccer in America and on which it has established partnerships with four of the most prominent international youth tournaments in the country.
As part of this partnership, Univision Deportes will produce and/or broadcast games on UDN (Univision Deportes Network), the No. 1 Spanish-language sports network in the USA, UnivisionDeportes.com and the Univision Deportes app; building on last year’s successful coverage which attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers.
The title sponsor of this year’s Cup is Nexen Tire, a leading global tire manufacturer, which is sponsoring the Cup for the second time. Nexen Tire’s US headquarters are located in Southern California, and the company also recently broke ground for its new technology center in Ohio.
Jeremy McDonald, Vice President of Surf Cup Sports, said, “We are incredibly proud of the partnership we have with Manchester City. Over the past three years, we have worked together to host the Nexen Manchester City Cup and the success of the tournament has helped further cement Surf Cup Sports’ reputation as the leading brand for development of youth soccer players in the San Diego area and across the country.”
“This is the fourth year Manchester City is partnering with Surf Cup Sports to host the Nexen Manchester City Cup and we are delighted by the growth of the event since 2015. This tournament represents a unique opportunity for young players to develop as footballers and for Manchester City to connect with soccer fans across America,” said Jason Wilcox, Manchester City Academy Director.
Travis Kang, CEO of Nexen Tire, also said, “We are thrilled to take part in providing a forum for young, aspiring athletes in the States to challenge and better themselves by sponsoring the Nexen Manchester City Cup for the second year. As a long-time partner and the Official Tire Partner of Manchester City, Nexen Tire will continue to seek opportunities to foster exciting, positive competitions for ambitious youth players.”
All games will be played at two venues: the 112-acre soccer complex Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar and the SoCal Sports Complex in Oceanside.
