NEW JERSEY ODP HOSTS MENTAL TOUGHNESS WEBINAR WITH JOHN HARKES NEW JERSEY ODP HOSTS MENTAL TOUGHNESS WEBINAR WITH JOHN HARKES

NJ ODP Hosts Mental Toughness Webinar with U.S. Soccer Legend John Harkes

Helping Young Athletes Develop Mental Strength for Success On & Off the Field

Mental toughness is a critical skill for soccer players at every level, and the New Jersey Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) is making sure its players understand its importance. As part of its 2022 webinar series, NJYS hosted a special discussion on mental resilience featuring U.S. Soccer legend and National Soccer Hall of Famer John Harkes.

Harkes, a New Jersey native, is one of the most accomplished players in U.S. soccer history. A two-time FIFA World Cup veteran, the former U.S. Men’s National Team captain was also the first American to play in the English Premier League, making history with Sheffield Wednesday FC. Today, he serves as the Sporting Director and Head Coach of USL League One’s Greenville Triumph SC, bringing a wealth of experience as a player and coach.

During the webinar, Harkes shared powerful insights on mental toughness, overcoming adversity, and preparing for challenges—all essential skills for young soccer players aiming to reach the next level.

Key Lessons on Mental Toughness from John Harkes

  • Developing a Competitive Mindset
    • “Hunger for competition starts early, and the best players always want to improve,” Harkes explained.
    • He emphasized that a growth mindset and the ability to learn from every experience are what separate good players from great ones.
  • Preparing for Adversity
    • “Challenges are unavoidable, but how you respond to them is what matters most.”
    • Harkes stressed that mental toughness isn’t about avoiding struggles—it’s about being ready for them. Learning how to stay focused, adapt, and push through setbacks is crucial for long-term success in soccer and life.
  • The Role of Parents & Coaches in Player Development
    • “Learn how your kids learn, understand what drives them, and be there to support them.”
    • Harkes urged parents and coaches to focus on guiding players without overprotecting them. He explained that letting young athletes experience failure and struggle helps them develop the resilience and problem-solving skills they will need at higher levels of competition.

The Importance of Mental Health in Youth Soccer

In addition to discussing mental toughness in competition, Harkes also highlighted the importance of mental health awareness in youth sports.

  • “Communication is key. Players, coaches, and parents need to have open discussions about mental health,” he emphasized.
  • With growing concerns about anxiety, stress, and burnout in youth athletes, Harkes encouraged a supportive environment where young players feel comfortable expressing their struggles.

NJYS & ODP: Developing Stronger, More Resilient Players

The New Jersey Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) is dedicated to helping young athletes reach their full potential—not just technically and tactically, but also mentally and emotionally.

NJYS Technical Director James Galanis, who led the webinar, recognized the impact of learning from a soccer legend like Harkes.

  • “John is a U.S. Soccer legend. Hearing his insights on mental strength and personal accountability was invaluable for our ODP players,” said Galanis.

Final Thoughts: Mental Toughness is a Game-Changer

Harkes’ insights remind players that skill alone is not enough—those who develop mental resilience, accountability, and a hunger to improve will always have the edge.
