NPSL Soccer News: Sacramento Gold FC forward Matt Wiesenfarth has received Mitre National Player of the Week honors after leading his side with a hat-trick in a 3-3 draw versus Sonoma County Sol.
“I’m extremely grateful to the NPSL for presenting me with this honor,” Wiesenfarth commented. “I’ve been putting in a lot of work to get to the next level and things like these tend to validate the effort that you make. A special thanks to the Gold coaching staff and organization for giving me a spot on the team after the season had started. I look forward to scoring more goals for my hometown club this year.”
He scored two goals in the previous match, giving him a total of five goals over two games.
“We are happy and excited that Matt is receiving the National Player of the Week award,” said Sacramento Gold FC head coach Ruben Mora Jr. “It is well deserved. We are glad to have Matt up front for us and we are certain he will continue to be a threat.”
The Sacramento, California native was a standout at Jesuit HS, scoring 58 goals in two seasons and finishing as the program’s third all-time leading goal scorer.
Wiesenfarth would go on to great success at UC Davis, where he was named Conference Freshman of the Year and Freshman All-American during the 2011 season. He finished as the university’s second all-time leader in points and earned a call-up to the U.S. U20 Men’s National Team in 2012.
