The Scoop on the First Match:
The Houston Dash kickoff the franchise’s second season and the third NWSL campaign this evening when they welcome the Washington Spirit to BBVA Compass Stadium.
The Dash take to the field in 2015 following an offseason featuring dramatic changes in on-field personnel. Managing director Brian Ching and coach Randy Waldrum wasted little time in reworking the roster – acquiring midfielder and U.S. international Carli Lloyd in October in a trade with the Western New York Flash. Then on draft day the Dash pulled off a pair of major additions – selecting midfielder Morgan Brian out of the University of Virginia with the No. 1 overall pick as well as sending the No. 13 overall pick to Portland Thorns FC in exchange for Jessica McDonald. The forward notched 11 goals – tied for third in the NWSL – as she enjoyed a breakout season with the Thorns in 2014 and the Dash brass will be hoping for more of the same this year.
Houston will also be looking for a boost last season’s second worst defense after bringing in Republic of Ireland international defender Stephanie Roche as well as continued contributions from Kealia Ohai and Melissa Henderson – both of whom scored in the Dash’s 2-0 preseason victory against the University of Texas. Houston will be looking for a better start in 2015 after winning just one of their first nine matches in their inaugural season.
The Spirit enter this year with high hopes of earning a second consecutive trip to the NWSL Playoffs.
Coach Mark Parsons will want his squad to squirrel away three points out of a the gate against a team Washington did not lose to last season – posting a 2-0-1 record against the Dash, including a win and a draw at BBVA Compass Stadium.
Canada international Diana Matheson, who registered a goal and an assist in two games against Houston in 2014, will once again bring her steady presence to the Spirit midfield in 2015. The Dash will also have to contend with 2014 NWSL Best XI members in Washington defender Ali Krieger.
Washington has lost just twice in their previous 10 regular-season contests (4-2-4) and will hope to pick up where they left off at the end of last season. The Spirit will also be looking to continue their strong play away from home in 2015 after posting the league’s third-ranked road record (5-5-2) in 2014.
