Sky Blue FC Top the Boston Breakers at Jordan Field
Sky Blue FC topped the Boston Breakers Sunday night to win its second straight match in the 2016 NWSL season. The New Jersey club scored a season-high three goals in the match to come back from an early deficit at Jordan Field.
NWSL Soccer News: Sky Blue FC topped the Boston Breakers 3-2 on Sunday night during National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action at Jordan Field. The New Jersey side tallied a season-high three goals in the match, with finishes coming from Sarah Killion, Leah Galton and Erica Skroski.
“I am very proud of the application that our team showed tonight,” said Christy Holly, Sky Blue FC head coach. “Every single player played a role in this victory. We showed some fantastic ability on the ball and also a tremendous amount of grit to see out the game. We will sit down and take a look at this film, and we will put in an even better performance next weekend against Washington.”
Boston took an early lead off midfielder Stephanie McCaffrey’s chip inside the box from the left flank in the 3rd minute of play. Eunice Beckmann collected and took a strike on goal that was deflected by Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Caroline Casey. Angela Salem gathered the rebound and finished it to give the Breakers a 1-0 advantage.
In the 28th minute, Galton turned into the box and was immediately taken down by defender Christen Westphal. The official pointed to the penalty spot, and Killion brought the match level as she placed her shot into the right-side netting.
Sky Blue FC went on to take the advantage in the 37th minute off a served ball from forward Tasha Kai that found Galton. The British international finished the ball one time to bring the score line to 2-1.
In the 72nd minute, Skroski gave Sky Blue FC the 3-1 advantage as she tallied her first professional goal.
Boston was able to make it a 3-2 contest in the 85th minute off a free kick from midfielder Louise Schillgard whose delivered ball to the back post met Julie King to finish it for the Breakers.
With the result, Sky Blue moves into fifth place in the NWSL, just two points shy of being in playoff position. Boston currently sits in last place following another strong performance that was just short of success.
“It’s frustrating because we want to be winning games. The players come in and work hard and we work hard as a coaching team to make sure we turn it around but for whatever reason, we’ve just not crossed the line in some of these performances this year,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “It’s not that we haven’t been creating chances. Apart from the (Western) New York game, we’ve been creating double figures in chances every week.”
Sky Blue FC will return home to Yurcak Field on Saturday, July 23rd, hosting the Washington Spirit at 7:00 p.m. The Breakers return to action Sunday, July 31, (6 p.m. ET) to face the Orlando Pride.
