Manon Melis of Seattle Reign FC is Named NWSL Player of the Week
Manon Melis is named NWSL Player of the Week following her brace that led Seattle Reign FC to a 3-1 win over Portland Thorns FC at Memorial Stadium. The Dutch international receives the honor for the first time in her career as Seattle prepares for a tough matchup versus the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday.
NWSL Soccer News: Seattle Reign FC forward Manon Melis was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association for Week 16 of the 2016 NWSL season.
Melis, 30, tallied two goals to help the Reign earn a 3-1 win against the Portland Thorns FC Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Seattle. It was the team’s fifth win at home this season.
The Rotterdam, Netherlands native scored her first goal of the game in the 27th minute when she made a run on a ball played forward by Nahomi Kawasumi and split Thorns defenders, chipping the ball over Thorns goalkeeper Michelle Betos.
The Dutch international scored again in the 50th minute when she gained possession off a Portland defense miscue and chipped the ball past Betos. Melis played 76 minutes in the game and finished with four shots (two on goal).
It is the first time Melis has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week, and is the 13th time a member of Reign FC has won the award.
The Seattle Reign FC return to action Sunday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m. ET against the Chicago Red Stars at Toyota Park in Chicago.
