Boston Breakers’s Adriana Leon Named NWSL Player of the Week
Adriana Leon of the Boston Breakers has been named NWSL Player of the Week after leading her side to a 3-0 versus Seattle Reign FC. The award is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
NWSL Soccer News: Boston Breakers forward Adriana Leon has received National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week honors for Week 3 of the 2017 NWSL season.
Leon, 24, led Boston with a goal and two assists in the club’s 3-0 home victory over Seattle Reign FC. The Breakers earned their first-ever win against the two-time NWSL Shield winners after going winless in the 10 previous matches (0-9-1) between the sides.
The Mississauga, Canada native opened the scoring in the 11th minute when she collected the ball and worked her way around two defenders and Seattle goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer before slotting home her first goal of the season.
Leon turned provider on Boston’s second and third goals as she played in midfielder Rose Lavelle for the No. 1 overall draft pick’s first NWSL goal in the 15th minute. She then set up forward Natasha Dowie for her second goal of the year in the 52nd minute.
Leon finished the game with three shots (two on target) and three chances created on 34 touches in 85 minutes before being substituted.
It is the first time Leon has received the NWSL Player of the Week award and the ninth time a Breakers player has been honored. She is the first Canadian international to win the award since Chicago Red Stars goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc claimed the honor during the final week of the 2015 NWSL campaign.
The Boston Breakers will return to action Sunday, May 7, at 6 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Jordan Field in in Boston.
