Boston Breakers forward Adriana Leon was voted the National Women’s Soccer League Player of the Week
Adriana Leon, 24, was selected by the NWSL Media Association for Player of the Week 21 of the 2017 NWSL season.
Leon had a goal and an assist to lead the Boston Breakers to a 3-0 road victory over the Washington Spirit as Boston snapped a 10-game winless run. It was also the first time the New England club won in 14 matches away from home.
The Mississauga, Ontario native set up the first goal of the game two minutes into the second half as she played in a pinpoint cross that Natasha Dowie attacked with a header that she put off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. Leon was in the right place at the right time to score Boston’s third goal in eight minutes as the ball ricocheted off her and into the net after a centering effort from Brooke Elby was deflected onto the crossbar.
The Canadian national now has six goals and six assists in what has been far and away the best year of her professional career in the NWSL. Her previous season high for goals came back in 2013 when she scored twice. She has also doubled her season best for assists from the three helpers she had for the Chicago Red Stars back in 2014.
It is the second time Leon has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the 10th time a Boston Breakers player has won the award. She previously earned the accolade for Week 3 of this season when she had a goal and two assists against Seattle Reign FC. Leon is the only Canadian national to accomplish the feat this season.
The Boston Breakers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. ET against Sky Blue FC at Jordan Field in Boston.
The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis. For more information on the NWSL Media Association, follow them on Twitter.
