Sydney Leroux Named NWSL Player of the Week
Sydney Leroux has been named NWSL Player of the Week after leading FCKC with a brace to edge the Washington Spirit in Week 7. The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
NWSL Soccer News: FC Kansas City forward Sydney Leroux has received National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week honors for Week 7 of the 2017 season.
Leroux, 27, scored her second and third goals of the campaign to lead FCKC to a 3-2 home win over the Washington Spirit. Kansas City extended their unbeaten run to four matches and were undefeated in the month of May.
The Surrey, British Columbia-born U.S. international brought her team level in the ninth minute after receiving a pass from Brittany Ratcliffe and using her first touch to take her passed the defender before striking a left-footed shot past Spirit goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe. She then fired the Blues back in front in the 27th minute after Shea Groom forced a turnover that allowed Leroux to run onto the ball and create the space for herself to smash a right-footed shot inside the near post.
The UCLA product played all 90 minutes against Washington in Week 7 and finished with a team-high five shots — three on target. The goals were the first for Leroux since opening day on April 16th. She is the first FCKC player to score twice in a game this season. The tallies were also the 19th and 20th of her NWSL career.
It is the fourth time Leroux has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week, which is tied with Seattle Reign midfielder Nahomi Kawasumi for the second most all-time behind former Washington Spirit forward Crystal Dunn (6). The accolade is the sixth time an FC Kansas City player has won the award. She previously received the honor during Week 4 and Week 13 of the 2013 NWSL season, as well as Week 4 of the 2014 season.
FC Kansas City will return to action in the NWSL Game of the Week on Lifetime this Saturday, June 3rd at 3:30 p.m. ET against the North Carolina Courage at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
