NWSL Soccer News: FC Kansas City forward Shea Groom has been voted NWSL Player of the Week by the NWSL Media Association after scoring two goals and recording an assist in a 4-1 win over Sky Blue FC. Groom has either scored or assisted on the game-winner in three of the last four victories for FC Kansas City.
Groom has now tallied four goals and six assists during the 2017 campaign, putting her among elite company. She’s one of only nine players with at least 10 points this season.
Groom kicked off the game on Sunday against Sky Blue FC by creating midfielder Lo’eau LaBonta’s goal in the 39th minute with a ball across the face of goal. The two traded roles five minutes later when Groom scored her first in the 44th minute. LaBonta provided a no-look pass over her own head to Groom, who bent her strike past Sky Blue goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan into the left side of the net.
Groom concluded her brace in the 64th minute off an assist from midfielder Desiree Scott. Sheridan made the initial save on Groom’s shot, but the rebound went directly back to the 24-year-old who got a knee to it for the finish.
In addition to her two goals and assist, Groom finished the match with all four of her shots on target, plus two key passes. Groom has won Player of the Week honors for the second time in her career, with her first back in Week 13 of the 2015 season.
