Sofia Huerta Named NWSL Player of the Week
Sofia Huerta of the Chicago Red Stars has been named NWSL Player of the Week after recording a pair of goals during two Week 4 matches. The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
NWSL Soccer News: Chicago Red Stars forward Sofia Huerta has received National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week honors for Week 4 of the 2018 campaign.
Huerta, 25, recorded two goals in two matches during Week 4. Her first tally helped Chicago earn a 3-0 victory against the Houston Dash on Wednesday, while her second goal versus Sky Blue FC on Saturday aided the Red Stars to a 1-1 draw at Toyota Park.
The Boise, Idaho native scored her first goal of the season in the 74th minute on Wednesday. Huerta converted a header off a long-driven ball sent into the penalty area by Danielle Colaprico to beat Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell. The tally was the final goal of the night as the Red Stars secured three points at home.
The U.S. international scored the fifth fastest goal in NWSL history just 44 seconds into the Saturday matchup. Alyssa Mautz laid the ball back for Huerta at the corner of the 18-yard box, and she lofted an attempted cross that sailed over the head of Sky Blue FC goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.
It is the fourth time Huerta has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the tenth time a Chicago Red Stars player has received the award. She becomes the seventh player in league history to earn the accolade on at least four separate occasions.
The Chicago Red Stars will return to action against the Washington Spirit on Saturday, April 28, at 7 p.m. ET at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
