Washington Spirit Remain Atop the NWSL Table Following Draw Versus Portland
With the fourth week of the NWSL in the books, Washington Spirit remain the league leaders despite a draw versus the Portland Thorns at home. Christen Press led the Chicago Red Stars with one goal on the night versus the Boston Breakers to put her tied with most goals in the league with Washington’s Diana Matheson.
Soccer News: Mother’s Day Weekend in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) saw league leaders Washington Spirit finish a scoreless draw versus the Portland Thorns, while Chicago Red Stars topped the Boston Breakers off a Christen Press game-winner to put them one point behind Washington.
Press is currently is tied for most goals in the league along with Washington Spirit’s Diana Matheson who have each tallied three goals in the first four league matches.
Houston Dash’s Carli Lloyd was unavailable over the weekend due to a suffered MCL strain; however, the club was still able to get the 2-1 win over FC Kansas City. Denise O’Sullivan opened up the scoring in the 69th minute off an assist from Chioma Ubogagu to give the Dash the lead late in the game. Ubogagu quickly doubled the lead off an assist from rookie Rachel Daly, which brings her total to three assists on the season. The match finished 2-1 with Yael Averbuch scoring a penalty kick for Kansas City in the 87th minute.
Orlando Pride topped Seattle Reign FC in a 2-0 victory as Alex Morgan tallied two assists on the night setting up Sarah Hagen and substitute Lianne Sanderson to give the club its second win of the season. Orlando remain at home for Week 5 of the NWSL as they welcome Western New York Flash on Saturday, May 14th at 7:30 p.m. ET.
WNY Flash came from behind to defeat Sky Blue FC in a 2-1 victory at Yurcak Field as Western New York sits one spot ahead of Sky Blue.
Tobin Heath of the Portland Thorns remains the assist leader of the league with four on the season despite the draw versus Washington over the weekend. The Thorns travel to take on Hope Solo and Seattle Reign on Saturday, May 14th at 10:00 p.m. ET.
Alyssa Naeher of the Chicago Red Stars and Stephanie Labbe of the Washington Spirit currently lead the league in clean sheets with a total of three in the 2016 season. FC Kansas City host Chicago at Swope Soccer Village on Friday, May 13th, while Washington face off against Houston Dash on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
