WNY Flash & the Portland Thorns Kick Off Week 9 of the NWSL
Week 9 of the 2016 NWSL season kicks off Friday night as WNY Flash welcome Portland Thorns FC to Rhinos Stadium. First place Chicago Red Stars welcome the Boston Breakers to Toyota Park on Saturday as Houston Dash close out the weekend versus FC Kansas City at home.
Soccer News: Week 9 of the 2016 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season kicks off tonight as Western New York Flash host the Portland Thorns FC at 7:00 pm E.T.
WNY Flash are currently tied in points with the Chicago Red Stars with goal differential putting Chicago in the top spot. Portland Thorns are unbeaten in the 2016 season and sit one point behind the top two teams with 14 points.
On Saturday, the Washington Spirit welcome Orlando Pride to Maureen Hendricks Field Maryland SoccerPlex. Kick off is set for 7:00 pm E.T. as Alex Morgan and Orlando come off a 1-0 loss to WNY Flash. Washington’s 1-1 draw last week versus the Boston Breakers sees the Spirit currently sit one point behind the league leaders.
Saturday concludes with the Boston Breakers traveling to Toyota Park to take on the Chicago Red Stars at 8:00 pm E.T. Chicago currently sits atop the NWSL table with 15 points as they come off a 1-1 draw against the Portland Thorns.
Chicago will be led by Christen Press who leads the league with four goals on the season and goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher who is tied for most clean sheets in the league with Washington Spirit’s Stephanie Labbe. Sky Blue FC welcome Megan Rapinoe and Seattle Reign FC to Yurcak Field on Sunday with kick off set for 6:00 pm E.T.
The weekend closes out with Houston Dash hosting FC Kansas City at 8:00 pm E.T. Houston lost to Seattle Reign 1-0 last week on the road, while FC Kansas City played out a 1-1 draw versus Sky Blue FC.
FC Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart currently leads the league with 32 saves as another week in the NWSL kicks off during a month of soccer across the globe.
