Washington Spirit Sit Atop the NWSL Standings with Portland Thorns
Portland Thorns fall to the Houston Dash as Washington Spirit record its third straight win to bring the two sides tied in points at the top of the table. Chicago outlasted Orlando Pride to claim the fourth spot, while Sky Blue FC jump to fifth place following a win over Boston Breakers on the road.
NWSL Soccer News: Week 13 of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) concludes with Portland Thorns FC and Washington Spirit tied in points atop the table. Portland fell for the second time this season as Washington wins its third straight match to catch the league leaders.
Washington Spirit topped FC Kansas City at Swope Soccer Village to give the visiting squad the 3-2 victory. Washington took the 2-0 advantage and were able to hold off a rallying Kansas City side that was led by goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart who leads the league in most saves.
The match of the week saw Orlando Pride hosting the Chicago Red Stars at Camping World Stadium. Orlando had the opportunity jump into fourth place ahead of Chicago, but the visiting squad was able to outlast the Pride to claim the 1-0 victory. Taylor Comeau tallied the lone goal off an assist from Sofia Huerta as the Red Stars currently sit in fourth place in the NWSL.
Match three on Saturday saw the Houston Dash top league-leading Portland Thorns FC 3-0 at BBVA Compass Stadium. Amber Brooks, Kealia Ohai and Rachel Daly tallied the three goals of the match to give Houston its third win of the 2016 season.
Portland currently is tied in points with Washington following its second straight loss.
Seattle Reign FC and Western New York Flash played out a 1-1 draw at Memorial Stadium to conclude the Saturday matches. Both goals came in the first half of play with Jessica McDonald bringing the match level in the 45th minute. McDonald bring her tally to six goals on the season as she sits behind teammate Lynn Williams who leads the NWSL.
Sky Blue FC topped Boston Breakers 3-2 on Sunday to conclude Week 13 as Sky Blue jumps to the fifth spot in the NWSL. Boston rallied to bring the home squad within one goal, but the tide was too heavy to overcome as the game concluded with Sky Blue holding the advantage.
