Soccer News from New York City FC: With a couple of new faces featuring thanks to players being called away on international duty, New York City FC played New England Revolution to a 1-1 draw despite New England playing down a man for almost 30 minutes.
NYCFC were first to make the breakthrough in the tenth minute of the game, as Man of the Match Tommy McNamara reacted first to a David Villa strike that went off the crossbar, McNamara headed the ball into the back of the net to give NYCFC the early lead.
New England equalized in the 38th minute with Chris Tierney hitting a free kick from the edge of the box that took a wicked deflection past Josh Saunders sending the teams in level at the break.
In the 51st minute New England midfielder Gershon Koffie made an unadvised foul against McNamara and drew a red card which reduced the Revolution to only 10 men for the rest of the match.
In the 90th Minute, Tony Taylor lofted a pass into the box which found the head of Patrick Mullins but was saved by Bobby Shuttlesworth.
Only a minute later, McNamara found himself outside the box and fired a shot on net, but the shot went wide and the final whistle blew as the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

New York City FC HC Patrick Vieira
You recruit 2 out of a possible 9 points, how would you characterize the homestand and Is that acceptable to you?
“Of course we aim to do better than that but at the end I am really disappointed tonight about the way we played more than the result. Because I think that if you pretend winning games you need to play we didn’t do it tonight and we ended in a draw. If you analyze the game properly we happy with the way, with the points that we take tonight because we deserve more. Of course something we need to work on… 2 points is not enough in 3 games.”
After the red card, how do you think NE stayed in the match and stayed in the match?…
“We made it really easy for them because of the way we played. We had no passing, no discipline.”
What were the struggles in the final 3rd?…
“It was to believe and stick to the way we want to play. We played with lack of personality and didn’t make proper decisions. We didn’t play at all.”
You took Jefferson out of the game early, why?…
“It was a tactical decision. We brought forward back. It was a decision.”
Was this game a step back?…
“Yes. It was frustrating because the last game against Orlando I was positively disappointed. Today, we didn’t play at all. You can only control your performance. Our performance wasn’t good at all.”
Why did you take men out of the game so early?…
“It is my responsibility to choose the players. I decided to change because we didn’t do well. I couldn’t take out tony or Mendoza or Andrea or anybody else. I thought my decision was the best. “
Happy with the 3 guys who came in…their performances?…
“Yes, but of course you want more. I don’t want to point the finger on any individual… it is a team. It is important for the players to understand that you express your talent through the collective. If the collective is not good it is difficult for any players to play. Today was a perfect example.”
New York City FC M Tommy McNamara
On being up a man during the 2nd half…
“We had a long time that we were up a man and when you have that much time where they have 10 men and you have 11; you have to score. Obviously we have to work on that going forward.”
On failing to take the lead back…
“We put a lot of effort into it to try and break through with that second goal but we just did not execute well enough.”
On if he was happy with today’s goal…
“No; because of the result. I don’t really care if I’m on the score sheet at the end of the day the most important thing is to get those 3 points. I don’t think we accomplished our goal here today.”
New York City FC D Jefferson Mena
On today’s match…
“It was a good game. We had opportunities to score and the other team made some great stops. They were well positioned and they were able to tie the game. Our team is still coming together and you can see the character of our team still in development. They played very strongly. As a team we need to get better each week to get the results that we want.”
New York City FC D Andoni Iraola
On today’s match…
“After the foul they were able to tie the game. We were frustrated because for most of the game we were playing a man up and we were unable to get the result that we wanted. We started the game really strong which came as a result of the Orlando game but we slowed down as the game went on. We were unable to finish in the last third of the field.”
New York City FC F Tony Taylor
What did you see building up to the play…
“It was a throw in from Andoni that made its way to me. We made some combinations and Tommy threw a back heel to me and passed it back, and Tommy was able to finish with the goal.”
On the progression of the game…
“I thought we attacked them very well. Both teams were attacking and defending well. We wanted the 3 points at home and that is what we are working for. We have to keep working hard and learn from our mistakes.”
On how the game changed after the red card…
“I saw that they sat back more so we needed to put more pressure on them to get the game to open up. They were putting a lot less pressure on us in the second half. They were waiting for the counter attack with a long ball.”
On not scoring a 2nd half goal in the last three games…
“Yeah, its tough, but it’s football. We need to keep working hard. We are getting good chances and the goals will come. We just need to stay positive and keep working.”
New York City FC M Kwadwo Poku
How did you feel out there?…
“I felt great. I think everyone wants to be on the field as much as possible so it was great to get involved and get my first start. I knew I was going to start yesterday so I felt ready.”
On Individual Performance and first touch…
“I thought I did a great job of attacking and defending the long balls. I was running as quickly as possible and push the ball up to the back four.”
On home game performance…
“We thought we should have won a few of those games. I think they did a great job sitting back and playing defensively. We need to keep working and pressuring. I want to give the other team credit; they did a good job of not leaving a lot of space for us behind the back four.”
On chemistry with other players…
“I think we understand each other very well. We will get better but it just comes down to figuring out how we want to attack.”
On impression you left on coach…
“I haven’t talked to Coach yet but personally I feel like I left a good impression and I am looking forward to playing in more games.”
Do you think players like Pirlo and Lampard are affecting your playing chances?…
“No, not at all. I think the coach knows best, and we will do what coach asks us to do. Obviously they have played at the greatest level, and I respect them a lot. It is every player’s dream to play at that level.”
On the expectations of NYCFC…
“We are pushing. It is not where we want to be but it is not a bad start through four games. I think we are on the right track.”
