Diane Scavuzzo: In the sea of summer soccer camps – what makes one. soccer schools unique?
Jeff Johnson: Successful Coaches come in many different forms. There are great coach educators, great college coaches, great DOC’s and great team coaches. All of these coaches have developed strengths to work within their arena of teaching the game of soccer. We can say with a strong belief that we are experts when it comes to creating the optimum camp environment. It takes an incredible amount of energy from a coach to leave a lasting impression on a player in just one week, at one. this is what we have perfected, the ability to inspire players to become the best they can be, to instill in them a intrinsic drive and passion for the game.
Diane Scavuzzo: Tell me more about your staff, philosophy and curriculum.
Jeff Johnson: All our staff are hand selected for their passion, ability to inspire and belief in our innovative curriculum. We create the perfect blend of coaching staff at our camps; older more experienced staff inspire through their knowledge of the game, and our younger staff inspire through their ability to play and demonstrate the techniques we are challenging the player to learn and refine.
Our philosophy demands that we have staff that are highly skilled in the specific areas of the game. At all of our camps, staff are given specific topics to lead, which highlight the coaches strengths. A coach who is excellent at teaching dribbling is given the lead role in teaching that aspect throughout the week. We ask our staff to become specialists in that one area, thus giving more to the player.
Our curriculum has been developed through many years of camp experience. We truly believe our current age specific weekly curriculums allow for players to focus on the primary ingredients required for success within the game. Our curriculum allows for repetition of the major technical factors, such as dribbling, receiving, passing, shooting and heading. Our innovative themed possession games then allow the player to combine the technical with the decision making in pressure situations. ‘Great’ players are players who have many different technical tools and also know which tool to select for a given situation. Our curriculum and teaching methods guide the player towards this path.
Diane Scavuzzo: What type of program should a player sign-up for?
Jeff Johnson: The Day program players range from recreation to club level. The Residential program players range from club to state, national team and or academy players. The player that attends one. Soccer Schools is the player that truly loves the game and strives to be the best they can be. This player doesn’t mind working hard, playing/training all day and enjoys learning and being taught new things and ideas. This is also the player that loves developing new friendships as well as strengthening the current relationships they have with their teammates that are also in attendance.
Diane Scavuzzo: Can you describe the overall experience for any player who has not attended your camps as of yet?
Jeff Johnson: Upon reflection players who attend our camp will look back with a smile, knowing that the environment challenged them in so many different ways, but also helped them become a better player and more importantly a better person.
