The Pitch Soccer Series: Episode 1 – The Fanatic
In England, football has become the national sport, if not a national obsession. Of all the sports fandoms in all the world, there is none more passionate than the football fan. The lengths to which some of them will go are really quite extraordinary. In this episode, we will explore the extremes of true fan obsession. Through our contributors’ personal stories, we’ll see what lengths people will go to support their team, and how cheering on their club gives them meaning and purpose in life. The very word ‘fan’ derives from ‘fanatics’. Supporters can be fanatical. They can be over the top, but whether they’re obsessives or whether they’re just fair-weather fans, without them, these days there really is no game.
The Pitch Soccer Series: Episode 2 – The Eternal Hope
In order to understand football, you have to understand “promotion” and “relegation”. It is the string of hope that ties every fan to their team and keeps them going through the highs and the lows. For English football fans, you always have the dream that one day your team can go right from the bottom all the way to the pinnacle of the Premier League. Simultaneously, there is always the lingering fear that it could work in reverse and your team could fall all the way out of the English Football League. This episode chronicles the unexpected rise of a small-town team, Burton Albion and the treacherous downfall of the formerly mighty Leeds United.
The Pitch Soccer Series: Episode 3 – The Auld Enemy
The rivalry between England and Scotland is the oldest fixture in international football. Truthfully, you could say this rivalry between the two countries is centuries old, going back as far as the 14th century. Famous Scottish heroes like William Wallace, who became the star of the Mel Gibson film “Braveheart,” were constantly fighting the English for independence. Scotland has come to regard England as the “auld enemy” where the football pitch has become the modern equivalent of the old battleground. While beating England has become Scotland’s equivalent of the World Cup, England can’t be bothered by their smaller, less successful neighbor.
The Pitch Soccer Series: Episode 4 –The Global Game
England may well be the birthplace of modern football, but the Beautiful Game has spread its wings and is now played on a global scale. Nonetheless, English teams hold a special place in the hearts of some international fans for their proud histories and the passion of their supporters. Why do people across the world get bitten by the football bug? And can someone from the other side of the planet ever truly understand the love that football inspires in local fans?
The Pitch Soccer Series: Episode 5 – The Way We Were
Twenty-five years ago, English football changed fundamentally and indelibly. What had been a resolutely working-class sport was transformed by the formation of the Premier League into one of the most lucrative entertainment products in the world. In the intervening decades, the clubs themselves have become status symbols for the international oligarchy. The quality of the football is better than ever but what does this mean for blue collar fans, who create the infectious football atmosphere, when they are priced out of the clubs?
The Pitch Soccer Series: Episode 6 – The Grassroots
The advent of the Premier League made the highest level of English football an international commodity, followed and loved by fans around the world. But below those rarefied heights, there are many more football clubs who would consider themselves lucky to draw a crowd in the thousands, let alone the millions who watch the Premiership. The non-league – the fifth tier of English football and below – is as multi-faceted and complex as the professional game, if rather less glamorous, but there is one thing that unites them all: an all-consuming passion for football. This episode tells the story and examines the motivations of those who choose to give their time, money and effort to the clubs at the heart of their communities rather than the behemoths of the Premiership.
