Final Round of Voting Open Until September 11
Soccer News: Western New York Flash midfielder Samantha Mewis has been named one of three finalists for the 2015 National Women’s Soccer League Rookie of the Year Award, after the Preliminary Round of voting by owners, general managers, coaches, players and the media.
Fans can now join the voting for the Final Round from now until 5:00 p.m. ET on Sept. 11 via social media or online. Fans are encouraged to vote for Mewis via Facebook and Twitter using the text “Mewis #NWSLROY”.
Mewis was selected with the Flash’s second pick (No. 4 overall) in the 2015 NWSL College Draft. In her first year as a pro, she finished tied for a team-high in both goals (4) and assists (4). She also led all NWSL rookies in assists, shots (55) and shots on goal (27) this season.
The UCLA product scored her first professional goal in the Flash’s home opener on May 2, helping lead her team to a 3-1 win over the Boston Breakers. She closed out the season with a three-point performance in the Flash’s season finale on September 4, scoring a goal and adding an assist in a 3-2 win against Portland.
Mewis’ goals were key to the Flash, as the team won all four games in which the rookie scored.
All 2015 NWSL Award winners will be announced in the days leading up to the NWSL Championship game on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 9:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1 at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. The Rookie of the Year will be announced on Monday, September 14. Other finalists for the award include Chicago’s Danielle Colaprico and Sofia Huerta.
