Soccer News from San Antonio FC: Internationally accomplished player development and performance expert Andy Thomson has joined San Antonio FC as an assistant coach, the club announced today. Thomson joins SAFC from Georgia where he served as Director of High Performance with Georgia United UFA working in the US Soccer Development Academy (USSDA).
Thomson, a native of Scotland, arrives in San Antonio with a remit of assisting SAFC head coach Darren Powell with on-field periodization of football training.
“I am really excited to have Andy join our staff,” said Powell. “When we were putting together the technical staff, we felt it very important to have an expert on football fitness and Andy is certainly that. As we build this program we will make sure the players are robust and fresh for games, and Andy certainly brings those insights for us.”
As part of industry leading expert Raymond Verheijen’s World Football Academy (WFA), Andy is classified as a WFA expert. The WFA is the one of the world’s leading institutes in coaching education. Thomson’s experiences with WFA provide a strategic and robust methodology, integrating player development & periodization.

“I am both excited and grateful to have the opportunity to join San Antonio FC,” said Thomson. “This is San Antonio’s club and it is an honor to be a part of the staff that is building the team that will best represent our community. Our mission is to develop a top fit team with fewer injuries.”
San Antonio FC will make its debut in front of home supporters at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 against Swope Park Rangers, the USL affiliate of Sporting Kansas City.
