Free Agent Midfielder Ranked 8th In MASL In Goals
Soccer News: The San Diego Sockers announced the signing of free agent midfielder/forward Matt Clare to a Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) contract for the 2015-16 season. Terms of the deal were not disclosed as per club policy.
“We’re very excited about Matt Clare joining the Sockers,” said general manager/VP of operations John Kentera, “He’s a hard working player who knows how to find the back of the net.”
Clare, 27, finished tenth in the MASL in scoring during the 2014-15 season with the Wichita B52s, netting a team-high 35 goals (T-8th MASL) and 48 points. The Tampa, Florida native scored 58 goals with 79 points in 32 games for the B52s from 2013-15. Clare also gained experience in the MISL with the Syracuse Silver Knights in 2012 and Wichita Wings in ’12-’13.
“Coming to San Diego was an opportunity I could not give up,” said Clare of his decision to come out West, “The organization has won fourteen championships and is in contention for a title every year. As a player, that’s what you want to be a part of. I know this team will only get stronger.”
A member of the U.S. National Arena Soccer Team, coached by Sockers coach/owner Phil Salvagio, Clare scored eight goals with an assist in six games helping Team USA to the first-ever WMF World Cup championship. It was there that he first connected with the Sockers coaching and training staff. Clare is currently playing outdoors for FC Wichita of the NPSL but will join the Sockers in time for preseason training camp.
“My expectations are very high, and my only goal is to bring the Ron Newman Cup back to the Sockers” said Clare, “I’m very proud to be a part of this organization and can’t wait to call San Diego home!”
