Youth Soccer News: “In a Class of Their Own” – San Diego Surf SC Announces the Graduating Class of 2014 College Commitments
The San Diego Surf Soccer Club hired Ryan Carruth in March of 2013 as the Surf SC College Office Director. As a USSF ‘B’ Licensed coach with 13 years of experience coaching youth and collegiate soccer, Carruth strives to be a positive resource in the community to help players and families make sense of the college recruitment process. He also serves as Men’s Assistant coach at local NCAA Division II Point Loma Nazarene University.
SoccerToday News sat down with Carruth to talk about the 2014 graduating class.
Diane Scavuzzo: Talk about this year’s graduating class from Surf Soccer Club
Ryan Carruth: With pleasure, but I think these kids speak pretty loudly for themselves. This year’s class is very special and they deserve a lot of praise. These are kids that are going to make some noise. You’ll be hearing those names. This class features NCAA Division I scholarship players headed to every major conference in the country: Pac 12, Big 10, ACC, Big East, WCC and the SEC.
We are equally proud of those who have made commitments to top Division II, Division III and NAIA programs, those who have earned academic merit scholarships, and those who will finalize their college plans in the weeks and months ahead.
This is not to mention the 2015 and 2016 Surf SC players who have made verbal commitments to the likes of Notre Dame, UCLA, Virginia Tech, NC State, Santa Clara and UCSB.
Diane Scavuzzo: How did Surf SC do it?
Ryan Carruth: I would like to put the spotlight on our players. We provide an environment and good coaching; they are the ones who have worked hard in our training environment and who have put in countless hours on their own polishing their craft. We are fortunate to be in a position to showcase our players in the best environments in front of college coaches – ECNL, U.S. Development Academy, Surf Cup, among others. Our players are the ones who have to perform consistently well in those environments to be considered for a spot in college soccer. That’s not easy to do, and so they deserve the praise.
As a club we provide our college advisory program to educate and empower. I’m here as a resource. Every club should provide something like that – some do a better job than others. Two guys who deserve big props are Ada Greenwood and Colin Chesters, who have been here for ages helping players make connections in the college game; not to mention what they have done to build one of the best clubs in the country.
Diane Scavuzzo: Are there more to come?
Ryan Carruth: The small college process can be a bit slower and we still have players who are in the process of finalizing their college plans. When the dust settles we should add another ten names to this list.
