OCTANE TRAINING KICKS BUTT – Train Like A Pro With The Pros
Octane Performance Training develops and equips athletes with the skill set to compete at an elite level. Designed by professional athletes that have trained and competed at the highest levels of competition, the Octane Performance Training System keeps athletes motivated, engaged, focused and eager to learn. Who do they train? The #1 pick of the 2015 NFL Draft and Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB is one of the athletes they work. What makes them different, why is this beneficial for soccer players and who is the force behind Octane PT? Here is the scoop.
SoccerToday met with former NFL pro footballer Gino Crump, who kicked off Octane Performance Training last year. A soccer mom recommended that we check out Octane PT and while skeptical in the beginning, I was amazed and impressed.
Diane Scavuzzo: What is your story?
Gino Crump: As a walk-on at both West Virginia University and the University of Arizona (8th All-Time in Receptions in a Single Season), the odds were against me. Before playing Division-1 football, I attended Junior College and Preparatory School at Glendale Community College and Fork Union Military Academy, with the vision of playing in the NFL, which became a reality in 2012.
In the midst of my journey to the NFL, I was afforded the opportunities to train with many of the best strength and conditioning staffs in America, amassing a wealth of knowledge about performance training and strength and conditioning along the way. This knowledge enabled me to develop a cutting edge performance training system, with the help of other top performance trainers in Southern California.
Diane Scavuzzo: Why did you start Octane Performance Training?
Gino Crump: I started Octane Performance Training because I felt there was a demand for an elite training program that could service both professional and youth athletes seeking to take their game to a higher level.
I spent a lot of time studying the market and I could not find any training program that could compare to what I had in mind. Nobody trains like I do. I think it is my passion for developing athletes. I knew starting my own company was the only way that I’d be able to truly impact and help top athletes.
Diane Scavuzzo: What inspires you?
Gino Crump: I draw my inspiration from my personal journey as an athlete.
I was never considered the best player in any sport even though I always felt that I was one of the best at everything growing up.
I am ultra competitive and I want to excel in anything that I do, which is why I am so passionate about providing our athletes with the best possible training experience that I can.
I was a walk-on at two major Division I universities before I became a record setting receiver at the University of Arizona and an NFL signee. Because I’ve always been the underdog I’ve learned to push myself to levels that no one else is willing to go to be successful.
My personal inspiration comes from my faith in God and relationship with Jesus Christ. Because of my faith I have been able to overcome tremendous odds in my life and I draw inspiration daily from my journey.
Diane Scavuzzo: Why is your training better?
Gino Crump: My training is the best because nobody can get more out of an athlete than I can. Nobody pays more attention to the small details. I communicate training points with great detail and I can be relentless when it comes to enforcing discipline in one’s technique … and dedication to one’s craft.
I want to make sure what we teach is absorbed and not left on the training floor. Not only do I know it is important to communicate verbally what is expected from an athlete, it is also critical to physically demonstrate. This is what matters when we have a discussion about what makes someone a great trainer.
Diane Scavuzzo: What are the worst mistakes athletes make when sprinting?
Gino Crump: HEEL STRIKE (Drive on balls of feet to accelerate and maintain forefoot strike at max velocity), NOT USING THEIR ARMS FOR SPEED & POWER(Arms can add up to 30% more torque into sprint performance, as well as stabilize the body at max speed), NOT TRAINING CONSISTENTLY.
Just like any other skill, repetition is key to performance – This part is not complicated. Physically, it engrains the motor patterns into the brain so that it becomes second nature and can be used at will during game situations.
Diane Scavuzzo: How can a soccer player benefit from Octane PT?
Gino Crump: At Octane, we work to teach the proper sprint mechanics; breaking the skill down into phases: acceleration mechanics and max velocity mechanics. While most sports are acceleration based, learning how and when to use both techniques is as vital to a soccer player as knowing how to swing a racquet is for a tennis player.
Octane, combines both science and practical knowledge from our playing careers to create drills that are simple to learn and comprehend. Our attention to detail makes the complex process of sprinting, second nature with consistent practice over time.
