The USD Toreros Pulled off an Ultimate Win with a Late Goal Against Saint Mary’s College
It is the Toreros third consecutive victory and snapped the Gaels three-game winning-streak.
Emma Barrow scored in the final five minutes of the match to propel San Diego to a thrilling, 2-1, victory against Saint Mary’s on Thursday night at Torero Stadium.
After Saint Mary’s scored a late equalizer in the 79th minute, USD pressed forward into the offensive zone and generated back-to-back corner kick opportunities. Tara Meier sent in the second attempt and found the head of Kelley Carusa who flicked on the cross to the mouth of the goal.
Barrow fought her way through a crowd of players to get her head on the ball and send it to the back of the net. It was Barrow’s first goal of her collegiate career and sent a lively crowd filled with students into a frenzy.
Sami Fairweather also scored the first goal of her career against the Gaels, getting the Toreros on the board in the first half.
Natalie Copenhaver sent a free kick to the top of the penalty box from the right side of the field. Maddie Marotta headed the ball toward the center of the goal where Fairweather was able to get her head on the pass and redirect it into the goal.
San Diego controlled a majority of the possession throughout the contest and did well to dictate the midfield. Ally Ocon and Mina Ghazizadeh had strong games and did well to possess the ball and distribute to teammates out wide.
Amber Michel made two saves and her defense played well in front of her. Meier turned in another strong performance in the centerback position, regularly serving as the last line of defense and shutting down Gaels strikers. Courtney Coate, Carusa and Copenhaver helped limit Saint Mary’s to seven shots and one corner kick.
The Toreros will look to continue their momentum and winning-streak on Saturday at 7 p.m. (PT) when they play host to Pacific.
