Santa Clara University Men’s & Women’s Soccer Programs Earn Wins
Santa Clara Men’s and Women’s soccer prepare for the opening of the NCAA season as they record a pair of wins over the weekend. The Women’s Broncos defeated their second ranked Pac-12 opponent in three days as they topped Cal Berkeley 1-0 at Stevens Stadium, while the Men’s Broncos edged Sacramento State on Saturday night.
College Soccer News: Santa Clara Men’s and Women’s Soccer recorded a pair of wins over the weekend as the 2016 NCAA college season prepares to kick off in the coming weeks.
Santa Clara Men’s Soccer ended their exhibition schedule of the 2016 season with a 2-0 victory over Sacramento State at Stevens Stadium on Saturday night. Junior Carlos Delgadillo, the 2015 leading scorer in the West Coast Conference, scored both goals for the Broncos.
Santa Clara put the pressure on Sacramento State from the kickoff, winning five corner kicks in the first 12 minutes of the match. The Broncos broke through in the 19th minute on a quick counter attack off a through ball from Andres Jimenez to Delgadillo who took a touch around the goalkeeper to score the opening goal of the match.
In the 27th minute, Delgadillo doubled the scoreline off a corner kick. The ball was played into the box when senior Parker Holland headed it to Delgadillo who scored on an open net.
“We have a little bit more work to do,” head coach Cameron Rast said. “There’s still some pieces that have to get sharper before we play next Friday. They will get sharper. We’ll have time to work on that.”
The 2016 regular season begins for the Men’s Broncos on Friday, August 26 at 5:30 p.m. PT when they travel to take on the Wisconsin Badgers.
The No. 21 Santa Clara Women’s Soccer topped their second ranked school in three days versus No. 18 Cal Berkeley in a 1-0 double overtime win on Sunday afternoon at Stevens Stadium. The Broncos remain the only team in the country to beat two teams ranked in the NSCAA top-25 during the opening weekend of the season.
Jenna Roering scored the game-winner in the 107th minute with the assist credited to Jordan Jesolva.
Jesolva sent a long pass from just inside midfield as Maddie Gonzalez blocked out her defender from making a play on the ball. Roering was able to gain control at the top of the box and take a touch before finishing just inside the left post.
With the win over No. 11 USC on Friday, Santa Clara has now beaten two ranked teams to start the season for the first time since 1993.
“This was a great opening week for us, there’s no doubt about it,” said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. “We had two very good performances against two very good Pac-12 teams. The team showed their toughness in a pair of overtime matches and we were able to score some nice goals this weekend.”
The Women’s Broncos return to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Washington State.
