Redshirt Freshman Records 10-Save Shut Out
Soccer News: UCLA freshman Arielle Schechtman (Del Mar, Calif.) was named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week after her 10-save shutout performance against Oregon in the Pac-12 opener.
In just her second career start, Schechtman recorded her second consecutive shutout, blanking the Ducks, 1-0. She made a career-high and Pac-12 season-best 10 saves on 13 Oregon shots, including six in the second half. She faced two separate sequences late in the game in which she had to make two quick reaction saves, stopping both the initial shot and the rebound shot as Oregon furiously tried to equalize. Schechtman’s shutout helped lower her goals against average to 0.88.
The Pac-12 honor is the first of Schechtman’s career and the third weekly honor for UCLA this season. Madison Tye (Sept. 22) and Gabbi Miranda (Sept. 1) previously won Defensive Player of the Week honors. UCLA now has a conference-record 53 Player of the Week honors.
Colorado’s Emily Paxton was named Offensive Player of the Week, while Arizona’s Sheaffer Skadsen was voted the Defensive Player of the Week.
Additionally, Schechtman was selected to the Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week, her first career honor and the second by a Bruin this year, following Annie Alvarado‘s selection a week ago.
