San Diego has a thriving soccer culture with passionate fans who are thrilled to be loyal to SD Loyal. After waiting what seemed like decades for an outdoor pro soccer team, SD Loyal has filled the nitch with pride and proven their spirit on the pitch.
Here is the latest news releasew from Landon Donovan’s club:
San Diego Loyal SC has an opponent for the next round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Coach Landon Donovan’s team will travel to Carson, California to face MLS’ LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer in a third round match of the national historic competition that pairs teams from every level of play into a tournament.
SD Loyal drew LA Galaxy Friday morning during U.S. Soccer’s live draw that aligned teams based on geographical region. This will be the first time SD Loyal will face LA Galaxy and an MLS club in official competition. Introducing teams from Major League Soccer in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, the road trip to LA Galaxy will take place between the April 19-21 window of competition at Dignity Health Sports Park.
“After we saw that we wouldn’t be going to Tucson, everyone was excited to have a chance to go play an MLS club,” Donovan said of facing the team where he won the 2005 MLS Cup and spent most of his playing career. “For me personally, with my history, I was excited for the opportunity for our guys to go play one of the best teams in MLS, my former team. So, it should be a great night. It’s a great opportunity. We’ve never had a chance to play an MLS team in a real game and now we have that opportunity. Our guys will be really excited and ready for it.”
SD Loyal is coming off a 2-1 second round Open Cup win against Albion San Diego earlier this week. Taylor Crull sent in a header in the 89th minute off a corner kick by Alejandro Guido to help send his team to the third round.
Donovan’s team played that midweek Open Cup match while also preparing for USL Championship action against Charleston Battery. SD Loyal kicks off against Charleston tomorrow, April 9 (7 p.m.) at Torero Stadium.
