Adekoya Leads Pac-12 Conference In Goals
Soccer News: UCLA sophomore striker Seyi Adekoya has been named the Pac-12 Conference Player of the Week for games from September 21-27. Adekoya scored four goals this week to lead the Bruins to a 2-1 record.
The Seattle native’s four-goal week brings his season total to six, which leads both the team and the Pac-12 Conference. Adekoya not only leads the conference in goals, but also points (12) and goals per game (0.75). After not scoring in the team’s opening four games, Adekoya has now racked up six goals over his last four matches.
Adekoya was an offensive force this week, getting things started with a late goal in the Bruins loss to UC Santa Barbara on Monday. The 5-foot-11 forward followed up that performance with an acrobatic goal and somersault celebration to lead UCLA to victory over VCU on Friday. Adekoya saved his best for last against UC Irvine, netting two goals in the incredible comeback overtime victory on Sunday. Behind by three goals and down to 10 men in the second half, Adekoya netted a bending free-kick off of the post and in to cut the deficit to two. He then followed that up with his second score of the game, sliding the ball between the goalkeeper’s legs to propel the eventual Bruin comeback victory.
Through eight games, Adekoya has already surpassed his goal total from a year ago and sits just two points behind his point total from 2014.
The Bruins begin conference play this weekend when they travel to take on Oregon State on Friday, October 2 at 1:30pm PT and Washington on Sunday, October 4 at 7:00pm PT. Both games can be seen live on the Pac-12 Networks.
