Soccer Locker Review: NJR X JORDAN COLLECTION
What do #23 and #10 share? The new Nike cleat.
Most soccer fans would not immediately think that Neymar Jr. and Michael Jordan have a lot in common but, according to Nike, they both share a mutual respect transcending sports, countries, and languages.
Both super stars appreciate the other’s style and athletic focus and Nike is bringing these two iconic sportsmen together in a unique collaboration. With a little cross promotion in mind and a lot of respect for each other’s talent — a new cleat design is born.
According to the press release, “Neymar Jr. becomes the first football (soccer) athlete to feature the Jumpman on his performance product. Additionally, the Jordan Brand will release a Neymar edition of the Jordan V Low with Neymar stitched inside the tongue.”
“Michael Jordan set the standard for greatness,” says Neymar Jr. “He’s an incredible competitor and a champion. I’ve always admired him, so to collaborate with him and have his icon on my boots means a great deal to me.”
“I’m excited that Neymar and the Jordan Brand are working together,” said Michael Jordan. “I’m a fan of his creativity, style and passion for the game of soccer. He’s a special player and I look forward to this collaboration.”
“The Jordan V is very iconic and has the fighter jet shark teeth on the front,” explains Nathan VanHook, Nike Football Sr. Design Director, “and the Hypervenom II that Neymar Jr. wears has an almost modernized version of that feature, so we took those elements and put them together.”
Neymar Jr.’s Brasil number, 10, appears on the lateral side of the left black boot and his Barcelona number, 11, appears on the left white boot.
Per Neymar Jr.’s request, the number 23 is on the right boot of both colorways in homage to Jordan. The sockliner and packaging feature a lock-up of Jordan and Neymar’s logos, while the boot heel features the Jumpman exclusively.
“IMPROVISING IS ESSENTIAL … THE SECRET IS THAT
IT’S POSSIBLE TO ‘TRAIN’ HOW TO IMPROVISE.” Neymar Jr.
The actual cleat — part from the unique collaboration — is still a Hypervenom, designed with lightweight materials and a synthetic upper for an anatomical fit that, according to Nike, provides maximum agility.
From cleats with the mid-cut collar sock to low risers, these cleats are designed to provide the player with control and speed. From playing on firm ground, turf or the futsal court, Hypervenom comes in a color and style to please many. The only question is, will these cleats help you jump higher?
