Surf BU8 team wins playing up in U9 bracket in Soccer in the Sand tournament.San Diego’s Soccer in the Sand beach tournament was held June 5th and 6th in Coronado, California. The beach competition is one of the first summer tournaments in Southern California and a great way to start the season. More than 100 teams competed and Surf BU8 team was thrilled to be one of the winners.Parents had the chance to coach their players in the games and many of left the fields with a new appreciation for their coaches. Robert Uno, who coached his son Ish Uno and his Surf U8 team in the competition says “I have a new appreciation for ALL the coaches; is a tough job.” Uno’s BU8 team played up in the BU9 bracket and won the championship. “The kids played with a lot of heart and I was proud to coach them,” says Uno. The BU8 team took on the Surf BU9 Premier team in the final and won. The BU8 team played had lost to the same BU9 team on Saturday.
The Soccer in the Sand tournament is a great opportunity for the coaches to take a break and watch parents take a turn coaching. Surf coach Pauly Dolinksy watched as Uno coached his former BU8 boys and enjoyed being on the sidelines and cheering.
Uno says “Our kids have real drive and are a pleasure to watch. These boys have an internal drive to succeed under any circumstances. The championship game was a great example. I was in awe to see how our boys came back from being down. At the first break the team was down 4-1 and came back strong to win 10-8.” While Uno is modest, his strong and positive coaching must also be acknowledged for the win.
According to player Michael Scavuzzo, “The reason the team won is because we tried harder. We believed we could do it.”
The team’s current Coach, Danny Salas was away in Houston, TX with his GU18 team and was kept up to date by texts and emails throughout the competition.
