Sounders Edge Toronto in Penalty Kicks
The Sounders became 21st MLS Cup Champions on Saturday night as goalkeeper Stefan Frei led Seattle to its first title in franchise history. Frei was named MLS Cup MVP after notching seven saves on the night, including two saves during penalty kicks.
MLS Soccer News: Seattle Sounders FC were crowned MLS Cup Champions on Saturday night as they edged Toronto FC in penalty kicks. Both teams made their first MLS Cup Final appearance in franchise history.
Tfirst opportunity of the match came in the second minute when Sebastian Giovinco found Jozy Altidore streaking in the Sounders penalty box. The U.S. international struck a ball towards a diving Stefan Frei, but defender Roman Torres deflected Altidore’s shot.
Neither side managed to break through during regulation with extra time needed to crown the champion of the 21st MLS Cup.
Seattle had perhaps its best opportunity of the evening just after the second period of extra time when Jordan Morris broke free down the left flank and sent a cross towards Alvaro Fernandez who was unable control the pass.
However, highlight opportunity of the match came when Altidore lofted a header that looked to be headed over Frei and into the back of the net. The Sounders goalkeeper stretched out to make an impressive acrobatic diving save to swat the ball away and keep the score deadlocked.
The match headed into penalties after ending a scoreless draw in overtime. Frei continued his heroics during penalties as he made two saves to lead the Sounders to their first MLS Cup championship since their 2009 expansion season.
