Cross-Border Exhibition to Feature “Stars of Tomorrow” from San Diego and Tijuana
Where are the soccer stars of tomorrow coming from? Some of them are right in San Diego’s backyard, and their skills will be on display on Saturday, March 22, when top youth teams from South San Diego and Tijuana will meet at Southwest High School Stadium for an international friendly.
CIF Champion Southwest High School boys’ varsity soccer team will take on the U17 Fuerzas Basicas from Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuincles de Caliente. The Southwest Raiders are the 2014 CIF Southern California Division II Regional champions, having defeated the Royal High School Highlanders from Simi Valley by a 3-1 score on March 15. The Xolos U17 also bring solid credentials, as the 2014 Baja California State Champions. The match will be a celebration of soccer and the cultural ties that link Southern California and Mexico.
“This is a great opportunity for our soccer community to celebrate the tremendous success of Southwest High’s boys’ varsity team, as well as kick off our new partnership with Xolos USA in a dramatic fashion,” said South Bay AYSO Assistant Commissioner Anthony Millican. “We hope the whole community turns out to honor the boys, and be entertained by a high quality soccer match.”
Club Xolos Tijuana wants to recognize the great achievement obtained by Southwest High School Soccer team by having them play an exhibition game vs Xolos u16 team.
The match, co-sponsored by South Bay AYSO, Xolos USA and the Southwest High School athletics department, kicks off at 1:00 p.m. and is free to the community. Following the game the Xolos will conduct a pair of skills clinics for members of South Bay AYSO.
