Youth Soccer News: Surf SC BU13 Are NHB Champions Again
In 2013, this San Diego Surf SC team of highly talented players won NHB and this year they returned to earn the title of champions again.
Coached by Steve Hill, the San Diego Surf SC BU13 Academy Select team won NHB for the second year in a row. Reigning NHB Champions for 2014 and 2013, the Surf BU13 team are familiar to the winner’s circle. The team is comprised of hard working and passionate players who love the game of soccer. Always early to practice, these players linger on the fields after practice for as long as they can. Long standing champions of many matches, this group of dedicated players are eager to learn and develop.
“I am extremely proud of the boys. NHB is a highly competitive three-day tournament and the team won all six games. We played GSA in the semi-finals and then battled West Coast FC (WCFC) in the final, which went into overtime and then was decided in PKs. West Coast is a sleeping giant and the team’s rivalry with GSA (Golden State Academy) dates back years,” said Hill.

“In the PKs, our boys scored all their shots and our goalie did not allow any balls to find the back of the net,” said Hill. “In my opinion, our goalie Carlos Zuniga is the best goalie in the BU13 age bracket. It takes a special player to be a goalie and to deal successfully with the pressure. When a defender makes a mistake, there is the goalie to stop the shot but when the goalie makes an error, there is nothing between him and the net.”
Colin Chesters, Surf SC’s Director of Coaching watched several teams play last weekend and said, “Steve Hill’s BU13’s continued last seasons successes by taking the NHB tournament. Playing 6 games in 3 days is never easy and the boys deserved their title as Champions. In the NHB Final, the team played for over 90 minutes and created the most chances and possessed the ball more than their competition – the highly worthy, new and improved WCFC team.”
“The competition was very tough at NHB and this is the second tournament we won this summer,” said Hill who will now turn his attention to SCDSL, which starts this weekend. “Our team won Cerritos Memorial Day Challenge Cup earlier in the summer and then I coached many of our players in Portugal at the Iber Cup and in Spain at the Donosti Cup. I am now looking forward to the development league.”

Surf BU13 team believes in the importance of team and while the group is made up of talented individuals, everyone knows that victories are accomplished by being the best team on the field. Always quick to congratulate and support each other, this team has big dreams.
Team Roster includes: Micah Ashton, Tannen Carrillo, Bryan Delgado, Danny Delgado, Andy Espinoza, John Foltyn, Ethan Franco, Francisco “Pancho” Gómez, Kai Haseyama, Chris Hegardt, Ángel Medina, Arman Samimi, Michael Scavuzzo, Ish Uno and Carlos Zúñiga (GK). On the team but did not play at NHB are Luis Martínez and Mateo Zauzeta (injured).
Hill coaches the BU13 and BU9 teams and is Surf SC’s Assistant Director of Coaching for BU8-BU12 age group.
