San Diego Surf Girls 2005 Coached by Barclay Win California Regional League and Chance to Compete in Hawaii
The American youth soccer world is filled with talented teams but few come together to put more hard work and dedication than the San Diego Surf SC 2005 girls team coached by Craig Barlcay. This is the last year this team will be able to compete in US Youth Soccer national and regional events and they are proud to have earned a spot to play in Hawaii.
Youth Soccer News: January 28, 2018 was the last day of the twelve game California Regional League, San Diego Surf Soccer Club’s girls 2005 team coached by Craig Barclay clinched the league championship with a win in their final league game. Barclay’s squad bested eleven other top teams from southern California to earn a spot in the US Youth Soccer Regional competition in Hawaii in June.
This is the second straight year that Surf girls have won the U13 California Regional League – last year the Surf 2004 team earned their way to Regionals in Seattle and advanced to the National Championship which they won, awarding Surf with their 10th National Championship.
This 2005 team looks to do the same, and will join the regional competition in Hawaii this year with momentum. Barclay’s 2005 team has lost only once in regular time in 2017 and has won every match they’ve played since August.
The team is ranked #1 in the nation on Youth Soccer Rankings USA, and continues to improve.
Like all SD Surf SC teams, Barclay’s 2005 team has trained at the Surf Cup Sports Park in Del Mar, California. This vast and gorgeous park of twenty-plus soccer fields lends itself to the development of a disciplined, possession style of play that is not only great to watch but also is difficult to deal with by teams playing a more direct style of play.
Not only did Barclay’s team win the possession battle in CRL play, but they also scored the most goals — a total of 46 — and, allowed the fewest goals, only 8 in the entire season.
This 2005s will now compete in National Cup and then battle the top teams in US Youth Soccer’s Region IV (California, Arizona, Alaska, Nevada, Colorado, Washington, Oregon, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming) for a spot in the National Championship.
This age is the only age in which the top teams at Surf SC and other U.S. Soccer Development Academy clubs will participate in an open, nationwide competition.
Next season, this team will enter the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (DA) and will no longer participate in national USYS competitions.
“I’m very proud of the work ethic and commitment of the team this season and over the last three years,” said coach Craig Barclay.
“Every single player has contributed to the success of the team not just on the field, but with their desire and application at every single practice,” said Barclay. “The girls are very driven to win an 11th National Championship for Surf and stamping their mark by adding another star to the badge.”
“I couldn’t be more proud of the families and players of this team who have shown such commitment to what we’re trying to develop as a club,” added Barclay. “This truly is a special group of people and I’m excited to see what the future holds for these talents young ladies.”
