Now, with 18 youth soccer partner clubs in the national Surf Affiliate program, the need for excellence in coaching information is clear.
The latest in a new slate of premier benefits that Surf Soccer is rolling out to their partner clubs, the premier youth soccer organization announced today that they’ll be working through new partners at The Coaching Manual to build a Surf-centric coaching collaboration site that will be provided to all coaches across the organization’s partner clubs.
The Coaching Manual is a state-of-the-art coaching education and collaboration software that will be able to align Surf coaching strategies across all partner clubs, from Hawaii to San Diego to New York.
“The goal here is coaching collaboration, not coaching education.”
Josh Henderson, National Director of Coaching for Surf Soccer.
“We have a reach in the soccer community that allows us to work with coaches in a wide variety of markets,” said Josh Henderson who joined Surf Soccer in 2015 as the Senior Boys Director of Coaching.

“We understand that what has worked for us in San Diego — our teams have won 11 National Championships and Surf has been voted the #1 girls soccer club in America — will not always be relevant in markets like El Paso, Utah or Spokane,” said Henderson. “The Coaching Manual will allow us to tap directly into our partner clubs’ coaching philosophies to provide relevant materials, give feedback, and to learn for ourselves.”
Along with Louis Hunt, who is an Assistant Director of Coaching and the USWNT U18 Head Coach, Henderson and their team at Surf Soccer are leading a new initiative to bring the highest level of coaching curriculum in the game that will be driven exclusively through The Coaching Manual.
Every coach in the Surf network is receiving a premier-level membership to the Coaching Manual, which has been pre-populated with over a thousand coaching sessions, all created by Surf.
“We’ve been spending the last several months meeting with our partner clubs and discussing their strengths and weaknesses as a club,” said Hunt.
“Through The Coaching Manual Surf site, we’ll be able to share practices, season plans, video content, and club culture documents across the whole network of clubs or individually between our HQ in San Diego and individual coaches,” said Hunt. “It’s an extremely powerful platform, and we’re excited to continue building on our great momentum.”
“This launch of the Surf Digital Coaching Platform, powered by The Coaching Manual, is the culmination of 12 months’ work on both sides.”
Terry Barton, CEO of The Coaching Manual.
“The Coaching Manual is super excited to be working with Surf and we are so proud of everyone’s efforts,” said Barton. “We recognize Surf as one of the most successful clubs in youth soccer in the USA. Their diligence, attention to detail and insistence on the highest of standards mirrors our approach at The Coaching Manual.”
“It is no coincidence that Surf is one of the top clubs in the country.
“We look forward to building on this launch to deliver continuous innovation, high-quality content and excellent education to all of the Surf coaches and players in the coming years,” said Barton.
Coaches in San Diego and across the network will begin using the coaching collaboration site for the Fall season, and Surf will continue developing curriculum for players from the recreation level to National Championship teams.
