USWNT to Face Fellow 2015 Women’s World Cup Participant Costa Rica in August
Soccer News: Tickets for the U.S. Women’s National Team’s second post-Women’s World Cup game against Costa Rica have officially sold out.
The U.S. Women will play in front of over 20,000 fans at Finley Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 19 in Chattanooga, Tennessee (6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2), setting a WNT attendance record in the state.
Tickets for the match sold out in one day, making it the fourth sellout in the history of the 18-year-old stadium and the fastest selling event held at the venue. The USA has played at Finley Stadium before, but not since 1997, when it defeated Sweden, 3-1, at the home of the National Premier Soccer League’s Chattanooga FC and the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Moccasins football and women’s soccer teams. The game against Sweden was the first soccer game held at Finley, drawing a crowd of 13,433 fans.
Three days prior to the match in Tennessee, the WNT will play Costa Rica in Pittsburgh, on Sunday, Aug. 16 at Heinz Field (1:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1). Tickets are available online and more than 23,000 have already been sold.
The WNT’s match in Pittsburgh marks the team’s second visit to Heinz Field, home of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, after defeating Iceland there by a 3-0 score in 2004 following the USA’s Olympic gold medal run in Greece. The return to Pittsburgh will be a homecoming of sorts for U.S. defender Meghan Klingenberg, who hails from nearby Gibsonia. The USA has played 15 times previously in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The USWNT will next contest the Final at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup on Sunday, July 5, at 7 p.m. ET when it takes on reigning World Champion Japan in a rematch of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup title match. The game will be broadcast live on FOX and Telemundo. Fans can also follow all the excitement on Twitter @ussoccer_wnt and @ussoccer_esp.
