Tijuana Xolos U15 Crowned LIGA MX International Tournament Champions
Club Tijuana’s U15 squad defeated the LA Galaxy U16 Academy team on Saturday to claim the LIGA MX International Tournament title at Estadio Azteca. The Xoloitzcuintles brought home the 2015 Apertura title, which qualified the squad for the international tournament that included teams from the MLS and LIGA MX.
Soccer News: Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuintles continues to win international competitions. This time, the U15 squad will take home the LIGA MX International Tournament after beating the LA Galaxy’s U16 Academy team 4-2 Saturday.
The Xoloitzcuintles name is once again imprinted in youth soccer history in one of the World’s historic sites, Estadio Azteca.
Daniel Lopez (18th and 40th minute), Jorge Navarro (32nd) and Jaime Velazquez (68th) scored for the Xoloitzcuintles in this historic match for the organization’s farm system. Kevin Negrete scored both for the Major League Soccer academy team (37th and 51st).
Lopez opened the scoring when he sent his blast to the upper corner of the net. Navaro scored on a header on a cross to the heart of the penalty area by Emmanuel Haro. Velazquez closed out the scoring with a right-footed blast.
The international tournament included four teams from the Mexican LIGA MX and four from Major League Soccer. Pachuca, Santos, UNAM and Club Tijuana represented Mexico while Philadelphia Union, FC Dallas, San Jose Earthquakes and the LA Galaxy represented the United States.
Club Tijuana U15, coached by Idelfonzo Mendoza not only finished as the champion but was also the best team in the group phase. It won its group with 18 points with a 6-1 record, scoring 14 goals and allowing four.
Lopez, who scored twice in the final, was the tournament top scorer with eight goals.
“It is a great achievement for our institution,” Mendoza said. “These kids have taken on a great process through our farm system. It is good that they get these type of achievements but our goal is to get them to play in the First Division.”
